Osteopathy has been developing at a very fast rate in Brazil. For many years now we have had a national register, the RBrO (Registro Brasileiro dos Osteopatas). Quite recently osteopathy has been recognised as a legal profession, resulting in quite a proliferation of osteopathic schools all over the country.
With that in mind, and under the guidance of Jim Jealous, we felt the need to bring Traditional Osteopathy to Brazil in the form of a paediatric 3 year program with Jim as our course director. For that purpose we have registered a non-profit organisation, ABC (Associação Brasileira da Criança, in Portuguese) that is responsible for the running of the course, and a social support project to accompany the children’s clinic.
Our aim is to provide education in the treatment of children to Brazilian and international osteopaths, treat children who would otherwise not be able to afford treatment, whilst also supporting and offering education to the families who visit our children’s centre.
The ABC has secured links with the local government and disabled children’s schools to provide much needed osteopathic care to children that would not otherwise have the opportunity to receive such wonderful help. As such we have been able to offer treatment to significantly disabled children, and the children of poorer families, however, we fully intend to make the centre widely available extending the treatment to all children, housed in a new purpose built clinic in the next few years.
